Privacy policy
Your Paths are calculated in your browser. Orthodrome has no accounts, advertising, tracking cookies or visitor profiles.
Service operator and data controller: Olli Vainio, privacy@orthodro.me.
In your browser
Airport searches, Path names and distance calculations run in your browser and are not uploaded. A link you choose to share carries its Paths and names in the part after #, which browsers do not send in HTTP requests. Anyone who receives the link can read it, and your browser may keep it in its history.
Show my location asks for your browser’s location permission and centres the map. The coordinates stay in the page’s memory: they are not saved, uploaded or included in shared links. Requests for map tiles can indicate the area you are viewing. You can revoke the permission in your browser settings and use the rest of the service without it.
Import flights reads the CSV export you choose from Flighty or my.flightradar24 in your browser. The file is not uploaded or saved: only the airports of each flight become Paths, named after the month, year or trip, and the page forgets the rest of the file, such as flight numbers, seats and notes, when the dialog closes. Like any Map, the imported Paths and their names appear in the address bar and in links you choose to share.
Make image and Make video draw the image or the MP4 video in your browser from the Paths shown on the map. The video is also encoded in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. Your location, popups and anything hidden on the map are never part of the image or the video. While a video is being exported, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on (Screen Wake Lock) where the browser offers it and releases the request when the export ends. Share passes the file, and the map’s link if Include link is on, only to the app you choose, which then handles them under its own terms. The link includes hidden Paths and Legs. The image and video settings are not saved.
Three preferences are saved in your browser’s local storage until you clear the site’s data: the Midnight or Frost theme (orthodrome-theme), the dock width (orthodrome-dock-width) and the height you set for Compare (orthodrome-compare-height). None of them identifies you, and none is sent to the server. Map tiles, airport data, fonts and scripts are served with the site; there is no third-party analytics script.
If you choose a social link, your browser opens Bluesky, Instagram or X. The service you open then handles the request under its own privacy policy.
Hosting and server logs
Orthodrome is hosted by Kapsi Internet-käyttäjät ry on servers in Finland.
Technical access logs may record your IP address, the request time, the requested page or file, the response status, bytes transferred, the referrer and the browser user agent. They are used to run the site, investigate errors and protect it against abuse. The operator compiles visitor statistics from the logs; the logs are not used to identify visitors, build profiles or for marketing.
Logs are kept for up to 12 months and then removed or overwritten. Only the operator and Kapsi, as hosting provider acting on the operator’s behalf, have access. Logs are disclosed to others only when the law requires it.
Kapsi sets a technical session cookie, SERVERID, that keeps your requests on the same backend server. Orthodrome does not use it for tracking.
Your rights
IP addresses in the logs are personal data. They are processed on the basis of legitimate interests (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)): running a reliable, secure service and understanding its overall use.
You can request access to, correction, deletion or restriction of your personal data, or object to its processing, by emailing privacy@orthodro.me. These rights apply as set out in the GDPR. Logs are not organised by person, so an IP address and an approximate date and time may be needed to find the relevant entries. The operator may ask for proportionate information to verify a request and normally responds within one month.
Orthodrome does not profile visitors or make automated decisions about them. You can also complain to your data protection authority, including the Finnish Data Protection Ombudsman.
